Is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)from long-distance air travel just the tip of
the iceberg?
Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) is apparently a bigger killer than breast
cancer, HIV/AIDS and traffic accidents combined (even though it is under-
diagnosed) according to “The Scotsman” - see
<http://news.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=252612005>
The article suggests that up to 10 per cent of all deaths in hospital may
be due to VTE.
The clot that causes death (which is usually lodged in the lungs) is hard
to find even if the doctors are looking for it (its presence can only be
detected if the there is a dissection).
Is it possible that OHS statistics are missing some work-related deaths
that might be caused (in part at least) by prolonged sedentary work?
