Dear friends and colleagues,
In continuing our tradition, it gives me great pleasure to extend to you the
exclusive opportunity to participate in the Eighth Hermitage Summer School.
The title of this years school is "Saint-Petersburg Art Treasures: The
Romanov Dynasty as Collectors of Art," and the official dates are August
7-14, 2005, St. Petersburg, Russia. The school includes two courses this
year ("Imperial Masterpieces of Oriental Art " and "Imperial Masterpieces
of Western Art") and will be hosted at the famous State Hermitage Museum and
the prestigious European University at St. Petersburg.
The Summer School is designed for graduate students, art historians, museum
curators, teachers, and those who are independently interested in the
history of Russian art and culture as well as the reception of Western Art
in Russia.
The curriculum follows the Romanovs throughout their dynasty as collectors
of World Art. The workshops and lectures are based on the vast collection of
the State Hermitage Museum and the Imperial Palaces. The courses also offer
you an unprecedented access to art treasures that are not available to the
general public and provides you with various opportunities to discuss the
given collections directly with museum curators. Lectures, workshops, and
tours will be conducted in English. The program will include alternating
"Days In" with lectures and workshops in the State Hermitage Museum and
"Days Out" with visits to various Imperial residences in St. Petersburg and
its surroundings.
