Women’s Contribution to the Future of Rural Regeneration:
 challenges, constraints, strategies and solutions

The Rural Women’s Network is organising a two day National Conference to be
held at Carlisle Racecourse on 20 and 21 April 2005.

The aims and objectives of the Conference will be to:
• Highlight and promote the importance of the contribution of women
in rural communities and economies
• Hear and discuss how rural women and organisations working with
rural women are
overcoming the challenges and constraints facing them
• Explore and develop strategies which will increase the
participation of women in
decision-making and planning
• Explore and develop strategies to facilitate the role of rural
women in the rural economy
• Develop co-ordinated and integrated solutions to the challenges and
constraints facing rural women

There will be a mix of international, national and local speakers,
including:
Rt. Hon Jenny Shipley DCNZM, Former Prime Minister of New Zealand
Martin Nesbit, Head of Rural Development Division, Defra
Pam Warhurst, Deputy Chair, The Countryside Agency
Dr Marilyn Waring, Economist, Farmer and Human Rights Activist
Chris Collier OBE, Chief Executive, Cumbria Tourist Board

There will be a series of case study seminars and workshops which will:
• Present examples of and share good practice
• Consider the effect of particular issues on women’s contribution to
rural communities and economies
• Devise and develop sustainable strategies and solutions which will
address these issues
• Work towards a national action plan that can be developed and co-
ordinated across organisations.

The seminars and workshops will be based on the following issues:

Social Inequality and Health
Community Development
Embracing Diversity in Rural Areas
The Role of the Carer
Physical Infrastructure
Employment Terms and Conditions
Widening Participation in Learning
Improving Employment Opportunities
Raising Awareness of Entrepreneurship
Mainstreaming and Dissemination
Decision-making and Governance

 The conference will be of interest to:
• Central government and agencies
• Public sector bodies and local authorities
• Practitioners involved in rural regeneration and/or working with
rural women
• Voluntary and community groups
• Training and education providers
• Sector Skills councils
• Chambers of Commerce
• Small Business Service
• Business Links
• Rural Women
