Faculty Position in European Political Economy or European Migration
The Institute for European Studies at the University of British
Columbia invites applications for a faculty position in European
Studies, beginning July 1, 2005 (or later). The appointment will most
likely be at the Associate or Full Professor level, although in
exceptional cases candidates with pertinent experience will be
considered at the Assistant Professor level.
The Institute for European Studies, established in 1998, is part of the
University of British Columbia's ongoing mission to advance
international knowledge and research about Europe. Located in the
Faculty of Graduate Studies and emphasizing a multidisciplinary
approach, the Institute promotes innovative research on Europe and the
exchange of ideas, students, and scholars between Canada and Europe.
It also provides a forum for public debate on European issues through
research seminars, workshops, lecture series, and international
conferences.
The Institute offers Canada’s only Master of Arts in European Studies.
The programme is a two-year, full-time interdisciplinary course of
study which addresses the need for students to meet and understand the
complex and changing realities of European politics, economics, and
culture in the 21st century. Faculty affiliated with the Institute also
have the opportunity to work with Ph.D. students studying in various
faculties and departments. The Institute is committed to furthering its
potential as a centre of excellence for European Studies in Canada.
Applicants for this position should have established records of
outstanding research and publication on the Political Economy of
European Integration and Public Policy OR Migration and questions of
Cultural Identity. A sound knowledge of the history and development of
EU institutions is an asset, as is particular expertise on contemporary
Germany; a demonstrated ability to interact and collaboratively develop
new research in a highly interdisciplinary setting is essential.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in an academic field relevant to this
research focus. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in
research, manage large-scale research projects and teaching at the
graduate level, and participate actively in various IES activities.
