ESRC (+3) PhD CASE Studentship:
Homemaking and material culture in nineteenth-century England and Wales
Department of Geography, Queen Mary, University of London
The Geffrye Museum, London
Applications are invited for this three year fully funded ESRC (+3) PhD
CASE Studentship to commence in the autumn of 2005.
The successful candidate will undertake research on a substantial number
of previously undiscovered nineteenth-century inventories to investigate
questions of middle-class homemaking and material culture. CASE
studentships involve a collaborative research relationship with a
non-academic organisation, and this project is to work with the Geffrye
Museum, one of the UK’s leading museums for the study of domestic
interiors, based in Shoreditch, East London. The supervisors of the
research will be Dr Alastair Owens at Queen Mary and Eleanor John,
Keeper of Curatorial Services at the Geffrye Museum.
The ESRC demands that the successful candidate has completed an ESRC-RT
recognised Masters Degree course in the last 5 years. This will be in
any area of the social sciences. If this criteria is not satisfied, the
ESRC does have scope to accept those who have completed other
qualifications, but this would need to be discussed with the project
supervisors and the ESRC.
