Cites harassment in bid for freedom

An inmate who rescued a guard at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional 
Jail has asked to be released from custody because of what he calls chronic 
harassment by fellow inmates.

In his time at the jail, Shelton said, he applied to the facility’s 
therapeutic community, which provides education and substance-abuse 
treatment. But since he was placed in protective custody, Shelton said, the 
enrollment process has ground to a halt.

Outreach for dropouts

EVERY YEAR, new members join the country's lost tribe of teenagers: the 
young people who drop out of high school. Because they are not in school, 
they are not helped by President Bush's signature No Child Left Behind 
program, giving a tragic irony to that name

The size of the tribe: In October 2001, 3.8 million 16- to 24-year-olds 
nationwide had not completed and were not enrolled in high school -- 10.7 
percent of the age group.

Larry Myatt of the Boston School Department's High School Renewal Office 
says high schools have to find a way to be a more therapeutic community for 
students who need the support. What such a school would look like is a 
matter for thoughtful and heartfelt debate. It could mean more social 
workers in schools or teachers taking basic steps such as discussing their 
own college experiences, reinforcing the importance and possibility of 
higher education. The goal is to create an inviting adult community that's 
attractive enough to lure teenagers away from dropping out.

The city had recently allocated P61,000 to cover expenses for the holding 
of a therapeutic seminar for female inmates of the new Bagong Buhay 
Rehabilitation Center in barangay Kalunasan

The seven-day therapeutic community training-seminar for female inmates is 
one of the proposed programs of BBRC’s oversight committee that Mayor Tomas 
Osmeña and Vice Mayor Michael Rama had earlier endorsed for implementation.

"Lawmakers eye meth use "

HELENA - Ironically, criminal impulses were the last thing on Wendy 
Walraven's mind when she started using meth. The mother of three wanted to 
be all the things society asked of her: efficient at work, keeper of a 
clean house, well groomed, talkative and vivacious.

Even without changing the state's laws, at least part of the corrections 
system is already moving in that direction. The Montana Women's Prison 
recently replaced the institution's in-house boot camp program, which 
attempted to reform young criminals with strict, military discipline, with 
a "therapeutic community" wing, modeled after traditional substance abuse 
treatment centers.
Women in the program live in a special, less restrictive part of the 
prison. They don't have cells, but group bedrooms, said Linda Bofto, an 
addictions counselor at the prison. The idea is not to merely lock up the 
women, but to teach them how to be adults in society, sort of an immersion 
program for appropriate behavior and healthy thinking.
"They're learning a whole new language," she said. Every woman has a job. 
They are taught how to confront each other appropriately, how to talk about 
their feelings and, ultimately, how to think and act in a healthy, new way.

They come up to him in the grocery store, on the street, at the airport: 
“Do you remember me? I’m a graduate of the program . . . .”
The program is Second Genesis, Washington’s first program for drug 
treatment, and the subject of all this grateful attention is Dr. Sidney 
Shankman, who saw a need and filled it back in 1969.
Not that that was easy. As head of Alexandria’s Community Mental Health 
Clinic, Shankman realized its services couldn’t handle the rising tide of 
lives and communities ruined by substance abuse. When he started an 
outpatient group and then the area’s first residential therapeutic 
community, he faced intolerance, threats, and financial strain to do it.
Second Genesis is not easy on the inside, either. Most clients come from 
the criminal-justice system. They’ve hit bottom, lost jobs and homes, 
destroyed families. They may be broke. “Anyone can leave at any time,” the 
staff tells them, “but if you do, you’re going to prison for the rest of 
your sentence.” Some find recovery tougher than prison.

Therapeutic Communities
Group methods are also used in a variety of types of therapeutic 
communities. The therapeutic community (TC) approach is marked by the use 
of a community of peers in the TC to bring about behavioral and 
psychological changes in the community members. The method used to bring 
about change is participation in a variety of groups in the TC. These 
groups include community groups (e.g., encounter groups and marathon 
groups) and educational groups (e.g., seminars and tutorials). These groups 
often use specific techniques to bring about self-awareness and increase 
participation in the group process (De Leon, 2002). The TC approach may be 
used with many types of patient populations in a wide range of special 
settings.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Personality Disorders

The relative effectiveness of three psychodynamically oriented treatment 
models for a mixed group of personality disorders--long-term residential 
treatment using a therapeutic community approach, briefer inpatient 
treatment followed by community-based dynamic therapy (step-down program) 
and general community psychiatric treatment--has been studied.
Results suggest that brief inpatient therapeutic community treatment 
followed by outpatient dynamic therapy is more effective than both 
comparator treatments (Chiesa et al., 2002). Follow-up at 36 months has 
confirmed this finding (Chiesa and Fonagy, 2003).

diagnosis of personality disorder….

8 At present, most secure therapeutic communities for people with a 
personality disorder only admit male offenders. HM Prison at Grendon in 
Buckinghamshire is the only entirely secure therapeutic community. The NHS 
Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York report. A 
systematic international review of therapeutic community treatment for 
people with personality disorders and mentally disordered offenders (1999) 
concluded that further research on the effectiveness of therapeutic 
communities for personality disorders is warranted.
