The manifest file just gives a list of files, it does not tell you
anything more than where the files are installed.

Probably not. Although those files are readable, they're nominally
private to libtool, and the format could in principle change without
warning. Isn't this information in the manifest file?
Just while it occurs to me, remember that there are potential issues
with relocating shared library files. I imagine you've thought of
those already, but just in case....
