From the RGS-IBG - book review editors and co-editor of Area posts need to
be filled!

-----

Book Review Editors post(s)

Book Reviews form an integral part of the Royal Geographical Society (with
IBG’s) three journals.

We are seeking two book review editors:
• one who will deal largely with human geography books and
• one who will deal with largely physical and environmental
geography books.

It is planned that from the appointment of the new Book Review Editors,
the system that will operate will be as follows:

Area: short reviews up to 100 words, commissioned from members of the
research groups, possibly postgraduates; plus longer reviews of up to 1000
words for geography textbooks and books that are major disciplinary
statements. It is expected that Area reviews will be of immediate interest
to those teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate community.

The Geographical Journal: reviews normally up to 750 words, commissioned
from the research community, and wider where applicable. Books that are
reviewed normally focus on environment and development, but other books of
relevance to the scholarly community will also be considered. This
reflects the wider readership of the journal.

Transactions: book reviews are not normally published in Transactions, and
tend only to be of major works that are of significant relevance to the
scholarly community. The Editor of Transactions is normally involved in
the final decision on book reviews that are included within the journal.

On-line book reviews: during 2005 in line with re-development of the RGS-
IBG website, it is hoped that there will be an option for including on-
line book reviews. This has yet to be confirmed.

The Book Review Editors are supported by a member of staff in the journals
office, who deals with the administrative side of the work.

How to apply: applicants should send in a CV (short version) plus a
covering letter outlining why they are applying for the post, how they
would structure this work around their other commitments, and what support
they might be given from their department.

Term of office: 3 years from 1 June 2005

Deadline for applications: 25 April 2005

Please write to Dr Lorraine Craig, Head of Research and HE, Royal
Geographical Society (with IBG), 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR. T:

All candidates will be informed of the outcome of their application.
