In a description of mines in the British Isles which appreared in the
November 1982 issue of Mining Magazine, on page 398 there was the
following comment:
" Iron ore was extracted until recently from the Frodingham beds near
Scunthorpe by both open-pit and underground methods in mines
belonging to the Ore Mining Branch of the British Steel Corporation
(BSC). However, the BSC closed down these operations earlier this year.
The underground mine has been permanently sealed, and overburden
stripping in the open pits ceased at the end of September, the draglines
being put up for sale. Remaining amounts of exposed ore are being taken
out by a contractor as part of a final clean-up operation."
