I presume, Ian, that she has covered the UNESCO World Heritage Site
Rammelsberg mine, Goslar, Germany in her research of German sources? Fire
setting was used extensively in that mine, for many centuries, even
attracting royal visits.

John

Subject: Re: Bibliography of Fire Setting
We have a doctoral post-graduate, Vanessa Py, studying anthracology here who
is now spreading her net wider to take in the whole field of exploitation of
forests and wood management for mining and smelting over the period from
antiquity to the Industrial Revolution in Europe.
She would be very grateful for any recent references in English to either
fire setting strictu sensu or wider domain management of timber resources
where the landowner was exploiting mineral wealth.
I have already exploited such online resources as I found, notably the
Mining History bibliography (which does not seem to be kept up to date since
about 1992), or the PDMHS Bulletin. If anyone has anything more recent, or
elsewhere, either as net-based references or specific titles they know of,
she would be very grateful, and of course the results of her work would be
available. She is currently exploring the Vatican Library, and her
bibliography has already trawled German, French, and Italian sources.
Cheers,
Ian Cowburn
