Expert Symposium: 'Dust, Disease and the Politics of Ill Health in mid-20th
century (c.1930 to 1970s) British Mining' (sponsored by the Wellcome Trust)
The above expert symposium originally scheduled for 29th and 30 April 2005
has been rearranged and is now taking place on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd
September 2005.
The symposium will focus on respiratory disease among the mining workforce in
the mid-20th century. We are planning to bring together medical experts,
policy makers and working witnesses to offer a fresh perspective on this key
theme in Britain's medical and social past. We are especially keen to
recruit 'expert witnesses' among physicians who had direct experience of
treating mining communities. In particular, we would like to hear from any
physicians who have worked in the South West and Somerset and the South Wales
and North Wales mining communities. We would value your participation and
would be grateful if you could inform your colleagues and friends about the
event. Oral histories have provided many and varied insights into the impact
of dust-related diseases on community and family life in mining districts.
For further information or expressions of interest please contact The Centre
for Medical History, University of Exeter, Amory Building, Rennes Drive,

We look forward to an early response from you as numbers for this event will
have to be limited.
