ESRC SEMINAR SERIES
SLEEP AND SOCIETY: CRITICAL THEMES, FUTURE AGENDAS
You are warmly invited to participate in an ESRC seminar series on ‘sleep
and society’, co-organised by sociologists at the University of Warwick
and the University of Surrey.
Six one day seminars are planned across a two-year period.
The second seminar: SLEEP, INTIMACY AND FAMILY LIFE will be held at the
University of Surrey on Tuesday 26 April 2005, from 10.3Oam-5.OOpm,
followed by drinks.
Speakers include:
• Professor Jan Pahl, University of Kent: ‘Power, inequality and resources
within families’
• Dr Jennifer Mason, University of Leeds: ‘Caring relations: gender,
intimacy and family life’
• Dr Jenny Hislop University of Surrey: ‘Gender by night: the social
context of women’s sleep’
• Rob Meadows, University of Surrey:: ‘Getting at men: engaging and
grappling with sleep’
• Sue Venn, University of Surrey: ‘Gendered approaches to sleep disruption
in couples’
Discussants during the day include: Professor Julia Brannen, University of
London; Professor Sara Arber, University of Surrey; Professor Jan Pahl,
University of Kent, Dr Jennifer Mason, University of Leeds; and Dr Simon
Williams, University of Warwick.
