Abstract
The issue of participation is very timely given the current political and
research agenda. There is a generally held assumption that patient
participation makes for better consultations. However, the perspectives of
patients as to what makes a good or a bad consultation, and how this
relates to notions of participation, have yet to be fully explored. This
paper draws on interview data that examined patientsperspectives concerning
judgements of goodor badin relation to audio-tape recorded consultations in
general practice. Responses varied from a focus on the personalities of
health care providers and the way in which consultations are organised, to
notions of rights and responsibilities, as well as issues relating to the
structural organisation of health care. Judgements as to what makes a
consultation 'good' or 'bad' differ, as does the extent to which
consultations judged to be 'good' or a 'bad' involve participation. These
findings are considered in relation to the current research and policy
focus on participation.
