Sociology of Mental Health:
Rethinking the Boundaries
A one day symposium to take place at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust,
Nottingham on Thursday, 30th June 2005 and hosted by the BSA Sociology of
Mental Health Study Group
Call for Papers
We are pleased to announce that the newly formed Sociology of Mental Health
Study
Group will be holding its first annual symposium this year. The aim of the
event is to
bring participants together to discuss issues and work being carried out
within the area
and to provide an opportunity for networking and the sharing of ideas and
information.
This year's event is on the theme of the 'boundaries' of the sociology of
mental health -
an issue raised at the study group's inaugural meeting at the BSA Medical
Sociology
Group conference in September last year. An increasing blurring of the
boundaries of
the area seems to be perceived at present - for example in the light of a
more general
'emotionalisation' both of society and within sociology. Hence the
question of how to
define the sociology of mental health as a study area - and indeed whether
it is
desirable to do so - seems particularly pertinent at the current time.
We therefore welcome submissions of abstracts around this theme of
rethinking the
boundaries of the sociology of mental health. Papers likely to contribute
towards
debate of this issue by discussing empirical research or methodological or
theoretical
matters within the study area are also invited. Abstracts of up to 250
words should be
submitted by Friday 25th March at the latest. Notification of acceptance
of abstracts
for the symposium will be by Friday 1st April.
The fee for attendance is £5 for BSA members, £10 for non-members and there
are a
limited number of free places available for students and those who are
unwaged. We
also hope to be able to cover travel costs for student and unwaged
presenters. Lunch
and refreshments will be provided. (Registration for the event will follow
the abstract
submission deadline.)
Please submit abstracts, along with name and contact details of the
author(s) to:
Lydia Lewis, Dept. Sociology, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen AB24 3QY.
