medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (7. February) is the feast day of:
Adauctus (d. 304) Adauctus was a quaestor at Nicomedia. He---and
the entire population of Antandro (Phrygia)--were burned to death
when it was discovered that they were all Christians.
Theodore of Heraclea (c. 320) Theodore is one of the four "great
martyrs" of orthodoxy. He was a general and governor of Pontus under
Emperor Licinius. He was beheaded when his religious preferences
were discovered.
Moses (d. c. 372) Moses was an Arab hermit who evangelized Bedouin
bands in the border area between Syria and Egypt. He became their
bishop and is known as "the apostle of the Saracens."
Richard "the king" (d. 720) Richard was a West Saxon, the father of
SS. Willibald, Winnebald, and Walburga. He went on a pilgrimage to
Rome with his sons, but died at Lucca. His tomb became a popular
miracle-working shrine, and the tale of his life grew until he was
"king of the English."
Luke the Younger (d. c. 946) Luke was originally from the island of
Aegina who became a monk and then a hermit near Corinth. He was so
famous for miracles that he got the nickname "thaumaturgus."
