italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
THE CITY IN ITALIAN CULTURE
April 2, 2005
Keynote Speaker: Martha Feldman, Professor of Music, University of Chicago
The University of Chicago Italian Studies Collective will hold its 9th
annual graduate student conference on the theme of the City in Italian
culture. Papers might address such topics as:
-city culture
-ceremony, festivity, and carnival
-the construction of city myths/urban rhetoric
-the "gendering" of the city and of its public/private spaces
-the relationship between the marginal, the ex-centric, and the city
-the ways in which the city is represented in literary works, visual arts,
and music
We welcome papers from various disciplines (Classical and Modern
Literatures, Art History, Film Studies, Music, Political Science,
Religion, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, etc.) and all historical
periods. Papers may be in English or Italian, but no longer than 15
minutes or 8 double-spaced pages (MLA format). Please submit abstracts
(500 words, to be considered anonymously) by February 7, 2005 via email to:
