CALL FOR PAPERS
BSA Risk Study Group - 4th Annual Conference
Risk Society: Critical Interrogations.
Monday 5th-Tuesday 6th September 2005 at Liverpool Hope University College
Plenary SpeakersDr. Lisa Adkins - Prof. Alan Irwin - Prof. Steve Tombs
Papers are invited for the BSA Risk and Society Study Conference, 'Risk
Society: Critical Interrogations'. This year's conference is aimed at
critically examining the relevance of risk and risk-thinking in contemporary
society. Drawing upon insights offered by a range of academic disciplines
such as Sociology, Cultural Studies, Health Studies, Gender Studies,
Criminology and Environment Studies the conference takes as its key focus an
analysis of the various forms that risks take and the extent to which these
impact upon individuals in the context of everyday life. Papers are invited
which address the conference's substantive themes:
· Risk-taking and risk-avoidance in everyday life;
· Crime and deviance in the risk society;
· Environmentalism and the globalisation of doubt;
· Risking gender and sexuality: problems with reflexivity;
· Risk-losers and risk-winners: social divisions in the risk society;
· Healthy Bodies: Risk-management and the reflexive-self;
· Risk and Governmentality.
The deadline for submitting abstracts is Monday 8th June 2005. Please submit
abstract using the attached form. Abstract submissions and any queries
should be directed to the conference organiser, Dave Merryweather (
