Dear Members of the British Comparative Literature Association (BCLA),

Some of the most exciting and challenging new writings in English today are
coming from the countries around the world which have gained their independence
in the course of the 20th century: nations in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean,
but also from Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The "Postcolonial Spring
School 2005", a conference taking place in Berlin, Germany, offers students and
experts a platform for exchange on this challenging new field.

The Postcolonial Spring School continues the successful tradition of a series of
conferences taking place under the auspices of ASNEL (Association for the Study
of the New Literatures in English). From April 4-8, 2005, students and
academics from all over the world will come together at the Free University
Berlin and enjoy a week of lectures, debates, workshops and seminars. In the
evenings, the conference will continue with a film night, performances,
readings and an art exhibition.

As organizers of the conference, we would like to ask you a favour. We would be
most grateful if you could help us to spread the word about this international
conference. Could you please send our announcement (below) on to students at
your department who might be interested in joining us in Berlin?

We will be glad to provide you with more information on the Postcolonial Spring
School.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to write us an email to

Many thanks in advance and best wishes,

Student Conference on the New Literatures in English: Calling for Participants

Are you interested in contemporary literature in English, coming from a
multicultural postcolonial background like Canada, Africa, Australia, or India?
Then join us at the "Postcolonial Spring School (PSS) 2005", a conference on new
literatures in English taking place this April in Berlin, Germany!

From April 4-8, 2005, you can experience postcolonial literature and culture
from all over the world at the Free University of Berlin. Whether advanced
student, newcomer, or expert, you are warmly invited to join us for a week of
seminars, lectures, workshops, and cultural events.

What's in for you at the PSS?

We have invited 35 authors and academics from Canada, South Africa, Europe,
Australia, New Zealand and India. You can enter the dialogue with them in
seminars, where you will have the opportunity to get European Credit Points,
depending on the seminar you choose. Details on the various seminars can be
found online under www.pss2005.com (just click on "programme" and you will be
able to see the schedule). In addition to the seminars and workshops on various
topics, our lectures will offer you an insight into the fields of postcolonial
literature.

Since it should not be all work, no play, the days' and brains' hard toil will
be made up for by performances, readings, an art exhibition, a movie screening
and parties in the evenings. Thus you will also have the chance to get to know
Berlin, and form friendships with people from all over the world!

How you can join the PSS

You can register online under www.pss2005.com/application.php to participate in
the PSS. You will have free accommodation in Berlin. On our website you can
find more information on your stay in Berlin and your registration.
The PSS is a non-commercial student project, so in order to cover our costs we
have to collect
participation fees. The registration fee is Euro 85 for students and Euro 110
for professionals. The deadline for registration is March 14, 2005. The sooner
you register, the better your chance to get a place in your favourite seminar!

How you can contact us

We are happy to answer any question you might have. Just write an email to
[log in to unmask]
and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Can you please do us a big favour? Tell friends and colleagues who might be
interested in joining our conference about the PSS and forward this
announcement - the more the better. Thanks for spreading the word for us!

We are looking forward to seeing you in Berlin!

Best wishes
The PSS Team
