Dear all,
Our sixth Intensive Training course has now finished, bringing the number of
those on this email list to just over 60. Some of those on this intensive
have asked for more historical and theoretical background to BNIM than the
textbook or the most recent version of the 'Short Guide' provides.
My sense is that the 'archaelogy of method' (forget knowledge) is such a
complex and arguable narrative that anything you say is bound to feel wrong
to a non-negligible number. As a result, I tend to avoid this sort of
question because I have never had time to do the research and thinking that
would enable me to be even obviously confident of an account.
However, some time ago in a training course I was asked the same question,
and I developed the TABLE OF TWEAKED INPUTS that I attach to this email for
those who are interested. Please treat it as a provisional 'structural
hypothesis' looking for refutation and improvement.
For those who haven't received a recent version of the 'Short Guide to BNIM'
I attach the latest version.
Just for information, Prue, Lunn Froggett, Stef Buckner and myself have just
completed the writing of a long qualitative evaluation report into a Health
Living Centre in Bromley-by-Bow. Our report on how the Centre works,
particularly with older people, will be published " shortly" (how long is a
piece of string or a funding/production operation?).The core elements in
the evaluation methodology include a whole variety of BNIM and other
interviews which we have found a powerful resource for describing and
evaluating the working of the Centre (they include other components, too,
including institutional observation, the examination of artwork, etc).
We'll send a message on this list about this BNIM-based qualitative
evaluation when it becomes available. If there are other examples of the use
of BNIM-interviews for pure or applied research that you think people would
be interested in, please use the list to tell other list-members about them.
Best wishes
Tom
P.S. We are going to have two more UK trainings in June (9-15) and in
November (no date fixed, but it will be 5/6 days either side of a weekend).
If you know anybody who might be interested, do ask them to write to me.
