You don't need MRCGP for GP work, but for GP training you need tosuccessfully complete the GP reg year (includes MCQ, audit, trainer's recommendation and 2hrs videoed consulltations, all of which must be passed), plus withinn the 7yrs prior to your completion date you must have done 2yrs of acceptable and preferably college accredited posts.
You might swing a year's A&E but would need 2 more 6/12 posts in other specialties. O&G is no longer compulsory, otherwise I would never have done GP training. You work the same hours as your trainer, so presumably if they have taken on some on-call, you will too.
Warning for A&E docs; GP is very isolating after the social environment of an emergency dept.
There is more paperwork than in any other area of clinical medicine. you run (or are, if a career locum) a small business so have to understand all sorts of legal and tax issues. You get marginally more respect (compared to being a 'casualty doc') from the other specialties but will always be denigrated for having taken the easy option.
