Creating ‘sustainable communities’ in a northern city-region
Funded through an ESRC CASE award in collaboration with the Building and Social
Housing Foundation and supervised by Dr. Gordon MacLeod and Dr. Harriet
Bulkeley, this PhD project will investigate the extent to which the development
of ‘sustainable communities’ represents a meaningful step change in urban
regeneration. It will ask:
o How and to what extent have the themes of ‘sustainability’ and ‘community’
been incorporated into policies for housing and regeneration in recent decades
within the Newcastle-Gateshead city-region?
o How significant is the local context and ‘place’ in shaping, enabling and
constraining the capacity to achieve policies for sustainable communities in
this particular urban region?
o How are the themes of ‘sustainability’ and ‘community’ being interpreted
and deployed in constructing new ‘sustainable communities’ in
Newcastle-Gateshead?
o In what ways does this represent a significant ‘step-change’ in policy?
The research will involve policy analysis and semi-structured interviews with a
range of policy-makers and practioners in the region, and will seek to identify
and evaluate new horizons in urban policy formulation for creating sustainable
communities.
Children’s geographies, urban sustainability and new approaches to the school
run
Funded by Go Ahead Northern and supervised by Dr Harriet Bulkeley and Dr Rachel
Pain, this PhD project will investigate the processes operating at different
scales which affect decisions about the school run, and the adoption and
success of strategies to reduce journeys by car. It will pay particular
attention to context (social and geographical) in order to address questions
about the uneven impact of policy making in this area, and make recommendations
for the future. It will ask:
o How, why and with what implications, have national and local policy with
respect to the journey to school evolved over the past decade?
o What determines travel choices made by children and parents over the
journey to school?
o How do children and parents respond to specific policies or strategies to
address the journey to school, and what are the implications for their
effectiveness?
The research will be carried out in schools in Gateshead and Oxford, and adopt a
participatory methodology involving qualitative techniques and children as peer
researchers. The project will contribute to a growing body of research on
children’s geographies and seek to offer a detailed account of journeys to
school in order to inform the development of future policies in this area.
