Ian,
We (you and I, not on list) have discussed sources for the bibliography of
firesetting before but, if Vanessa is now looking at woodland management
related to all aspects mining and smelting, there is going to be far more
material available. Iron smelting in particularly has attracted a number of
studies on fuel supply.
I'm not in a position to quote particular sources at the moment but you might
look at the listing on Historical Metallurgy Society website. There is also a
very good study published by English Heritage on the Cumbrian iron industry.
You will probably be familiar with the papers in 'Boles and Smeltmills' (1992)
and there should be work by, and in collaboration with, Peter Crew on fuel
sources in north Wales, plus a number of paleo-environmental studies.
If I think of anything else which might be to hand, I'll send it off list.
Peter
