Has anyone mentioned the Gartner report on Sharepoint (published 24 Feb
2004) yet? It identified serious concerns with the document management
functionality of the software, basically saying if you're looking for
document management, don't look at Sharepoint. (And of course it doesn't
do ERM.)
Quote:
'Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 has improved significantly as
a portal since the first version and is now a viable portal product.
However, document management functionality has declined below acceptable
levels'
We may have to confront issues here as our EDRM project has been closed
down (no money and too much business change already) and the offer of
Sharepoint is hanging around...tantalising some of those in our IT
dept...

I fully agree with recent comments. My employer had only partially
rolled-
out Sharepoint - for "e-document sharing" - before I was recruited. To
gather knowledge, I started a List discussion about it about 18 months
ago,
and got many responses similar to recent ones. Since then, MS has
launched
an updated version - but apparently you cannot simply upgrade to it,
but
need to purchase new licences? - as part of MS 2003 package with
XP-Pro?
It has much stronger functionality now, but is still far from being an
EDRMS. In my opinion, it has it's place, especially for smaller
businesses
who need lowish-cost pragmatic solutions; or where it can be
integrated
with other software. It is really a question of defining "fitness for
purpose" in light of your specific needs, before choosing a product.
I am in process of buying something much more complex and
powerful...and
expensive...that integrates well with our other applications, and that
best
matches the Enterprise-wide DM, IM, KM, CM, DAM, RM, e-mail, data, and
other e-Archiving needs of an international company. We do not intend
to
withdraw Sharepoint from existing users, but we will not give it to any
new
ones, and everyone will get the new product for RM purposes...
