Hi
Currently I am doing some work with the ESDtoolkit and the RMS local government
group on the Local Government Classification Scheme (LGCS).

As it stands the LGCS is mapped to what is known as the LGSL. (I cannot remember
what this is called but it refers to the process id's in the ESD toolkit the bit
where we need to have completed 100% compliance by the end of the year). To
obtain mappings of one to the other you need to go on the ESDtoolkit.

The LGSL is mapped to the Local Government Category List (LGCL) which is
compulsory for information on websites of Local authorities. The LGCL is
currently being merged with Seamless to become the IPSV (integrated public
service vocabulary).

Information about the compulsive nature of the LGCL and IPSV to follow.

At a meeting on Monday there was clear agreement that we need to have a
structure to support records/information management (ie LGCS), and there is also
a need for the IPSV.

What is currently planned is:
LGCS to be completed by June 2005
   to include Retention details
   vital record tags
suggestions on whether a specific class should be included in a LA
   publication scheme
   suggested security levels
and mapped to individuals PIDS in the LGSL
and to try and get the LGCS supported by the ODPM

As the LGCS is mapped to the LGSL, and the LGCL (to become IPSV) are also
mapped to the LGSL. Local authorities will in the future be able to use one to
map or automatically link to the other.

Let me know if you are interested in supporting the developments of the LGCS.

ps vast apologies for all the acronyms but this area is filled with them.

Thanks

Just to muddy the waters a bit.

The Local e-government standards body are involved in a Vocabulary Merger
Project of the GCL, LGCL and seamlessUK taxonomies to produce a Merged Public
Sector Vocabulary. Details can be found at

Sorry to bring everyone back down to earth (and away from the movies), but
I have a query regarding classification schemes in a local authority.

We appreciate that the use of GCL is mandated and recognise that it is not
meant to satisfy our every need for a classification scheme. By contrast
the LGCS seems to meet our needs quite happily, so we appear to be left
trying to run LGCS under GCL.

From what I have read about GCL, this is quite acceptable. It just means
we have to do the donkey work of slotting them together. Has anyone done
this already ? Is it available anywhere ?
