Freedom Of Information: Professor Alasdair S. Roberts
Description: This page is maintained by Professor Alasdair S. Roberts an associate professor in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. It provides free access to a large collection of his journal articles, book reviews and conference papers published on freedom of information issues from the mid 1990s to the current day. These include comparisons of freedom of information legislation and state secrecy in the USA, Canada and UK. It also includes material relating to the access and declassification policies of international organisations. Other features of the site include: access to a searchable database of requests for information made under Canada's Access to Information Act, links to full text Freedom of Information legislation and international regulations.

UN Global E-Government Readiness Report 2004
Description: This annual report was published by the UN in December 2004. Part One provides access to a survey of the use of ICT and electronic government services by national governments worldwide during 2003./4.Part presents a paradigm for the future development and use of new technology to increase democracy and public participation in politics. The report was prepared by the Division for Public Administration and development Management. There are links to previous annual reports. The full text is in pdf format and therefore requires access to an Adobe Acrobat Reader for use.

Newspaper Pictorials: World War 1
Description: This site forms part of the library of Congress American Memory Project. It provides free access to a collection of images taken from US newspapers published during the First World War 1914-1918. The main sources are the New York Times and the New York Tribune, including the three primary sources The War of the Nations: Portfolio in Rotogravure Etchings, a volume published by the New York Times shortly after the armistice that compiled selected images from their "Mid-Week Pictorial" supplements of 1914-19; Sunday rotogravure sections from the New York Times for 1914-19; and Sunday rotogravure sections from the New York Tribune for 1916-19. The images are a valuable source of information about American views of the war in Europe, war propaganda and a pictorial record of the conflict and life on the home front at this time. In addition to the images the site also contains a timeline of key events and essays on aspects of the war and its newspaper and pictorial coverage. Rights information is displayed on the site.

Turkmenistan Project
Description: The Turkmenistan Project is a special initiative of the Open Society Central Eurasia Project. It was established in 2002 and seeks to promote the development of civil society and democracy in Turkmenistan. Its web site provides access to weekly news briefs on political, economic, social and human rights issues. Also accessible are a large collection of full text documents and papers about Turkmenistan which have been published by the Open Society Institute, OSCE, United Nations and leading human rights organisations since the mid 1990s. Other features of the site include: maps of the region, background facts on its history and culture and links to useful web sites.

ECPR Standing Group on Women and Politics
Description: This is a specialist sub-group of the European Consortium on Political Research (ECPR). It specialises in research relating to women and politics, including geender representation, gender quotas and political parties in Europe, women and political participation. Its web site provides information on the aims of the group and its activities. It includes free access to a research register of specialists in the field and a number of full text conference papers and recent articles from members.

Redefining Rights in America: The Civil Rights Record of the George W. Bush Administration 2001-2004
Description: This site provides access to the full text of a report published by the United States Civil Rights Commission in September 2004. It analyses the impact of legislation introduced between 2001-2004 on the civil rights of Americans. A particular focus is on the negative impact of anti-terrorism, homeland secuurity and other laws introduced in the post september 11 period on civil liberties. The impact on particular religious groups, such as Muslims, migrant workers and native Americans is considered. Also analysed are funding levels for civil rights programmes and the rhetoric and policy of the government. Users should note that the full text is in pdf format and therefore requires access to an Adobe Acrobat Reader for use.
