With my IUEDR support(defunct) hat on:

Anyone remember IUERAW? A VAX->UNIX format conversion utility for
IUEDR data it seems - Chris Lloyd from RAL wants it, as per the
attched email exchange. Grepping in the IUEDR source/docs (or DIPSO
source, or the whole of the USSC for that matter) doesn't show it up.
In fact it doesn't even get a Google hit, which is quite impressive
for a 6-letter word! If anyone can shed some light, either get
back to me or to Chris directly.

cheers

Mark

Mark,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately the RAW routine looks like a standard
one for reading RAW iue images, not what I'm after. When the iue files were
dearchived onto a VAX and user ran iuedr on a VAX there was no problem, but
as people moved over to unix we introduced the UNIX_FORMAT utility which
made the necessary format changes and this was run on the VAX. Later the VAX
was removed and files were downloaded directly to unix machines and the
format changes had to be made there, hence iueraw. I'm not sure that it was
ever widely used, mostly here and UCL I guess. All I have is the executable
and never had any documentation. So if that aids your search all to the
good. My guess is that it should be bundled up somewhere with the iuedr code
as that is its only use. I've heard back from Dave Mills who says...

I do remember it. I think you will find it in either
IUEDR or DIPSO, both of which you should still be able to
grab from starlink sites.

Ah, if it were that easy...

Cheers,

Chris

Not sure if I can provide any useful help, but here's what I have.

You may have already spotted in the IUEDR help the following comment
(http://www.star.ucl.ac.uk/~mjc/iuedr/iuedr_help/Accessing_data_via_NFS.html
):

If the data resides on a VAX served disk then you must first convert
its directory entry using the following command :

         UNIX_FORMAT image-name

This command does not change the data in any way. It merely alters
the description of the file format as stored in the VAX directory.

If at some later stage you wish to use the VAX version of IUEDR on
the same data file it first be necessary to use the command

         VAX_FORMAT image-name

   to convert back.

I'm ashamed to say that I no longer have enough VAX/VMS knowledge at
my fingertips to know exactly what is meant by this, but it sounds like
UNIX_FORMAT doesn't modify the data file itself, so (assuming that
you're working on *nix rather than VMS) this step probably represents
a NOOP.

On further investigation I also see a routine called RAW in the source
which you can view here:

   http://andromeda.star.bris.ac.uk/cgi-bin/scb?raw_&iuedr

(all IUEDR hyperlinked source can be found at
http://andromeda.star.bris.ac.uk/cgi-bin/scb?package=iuedr).

I ought to say that IUEDR has been nominally unsupported for some
years now, but we like to help if we can, so if this doesn't sort you
out let me know and I'll ask around, there are people here who have
longer memories than me.

Mark

PS I'm away (at RAL as it happens) between tomorrow and the end of the week.
