SHOULD THE LEFT CHOOSE CHOICE?
Joint Catalyst-Compass seminar
Thursday 3 February 2005, 6pm - 7:30pm
Wilson Room, Portcullis House, London SW1
As a probable election year opens, it is widely anticipated that the major
parties will campaign over competing bids to offer more individual "choice"
in public services. Catalyst and Compass have jointly organised a special
Westminster seminar on the issue featuring a rare UK appearance from
Professor Barry Schwartz of Swathmore College Philadelphia, author of the
highly influential book "The Paradox of Choice: Why less is more".
Speakers:
BARRY SCHWARTZ
author, The Paradox of Choice
IAN PARKER
New Local Government Network
and others to be confirmed...
Chair
JOHN DENHAM MP

"British citizens ... care a good deal less about choice than they do
about being treated with dignity, being treated by competent and
compassionate physicians rather than indifferent bureaucrats, being treated
in a timely fashion, being informed of their condition, and being involved
in medical decisions. In my opinion, British citizens care about the right
things, and they are appropriately dubious that greater choice will make any
of these things happen."
