Hi Michael
Thanks for that. I had a bit of difficulty in tracking down course description languages that fitted our courses, although I did come across the posting by Scott Wilson yesterday; I'll be signing up to the IMS-ENTERPRISE list too. The work there looked quite impressive, containing a lot of detail in the structure that could hold useful metadata.
Yes, we'd like to implement an advanced course search page like your test page, so that users could select and specify subject, mode, times etc. I expect that one result of a common standard would be education sector metasearch web applications that trawled through the curriculum XML published on institutional websites (I think www.hero.ac.uk offered this as part of a general description, and my Glenrothes colleague David Cornall has used one provided by 2LC http://www.2lc.info/ligao/xml/schema/CourseImportSchema.xsd).
Once a standard is available, the next stage for us will be deciding on an authoring tool and building a front end for our Marketing staff to key in the parts of our course description not held by our Information Systems and Portfolio Management databases. Plus converting the existing prospectus information from Word into the new format.

Hi Tavis
This is something we have also been looking at as part of our Technology Transfer project, and I had made a couple of attempts at coming up with a schema. One was an extension to the IMS Enterprise spec (which was absolute garbage!) and the other borrowed heavily from the LOM (which was slightly better). There's a test page at http://www.reidkerr.ac.uk/web/coursesxml/coursesearch.asp which delivers the course information in the LOM-based format.
I was at the meeting yesterday and I'm pretty confident that the group will be able to come up with something usable. Scott Wilson from CETIS has come up with a rough starting point (http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind0501&L=ims-enterprise&T=0&F=&S=&P=59) which I think will be getting discussed on the Enterprise SIG Jiscmail list (IMS-ENTERPRISE).
Cheers
Michael

Subject: CETIS meeting on Developing a Course Information Standard
Hi Scottish Web Folk
We were looking at developing a course information schema in Fife and Glenrothes Colleges, so this was of interest:
http://www.cetis.ac.uk/events/event-items/20050104115222
I've sent in a few suggestions based on our joint work so far (see attached correspondence).
