Assistant Records Manager.

The Science Museum has a vacancy for a full-time Assistant Records Manager
to work in the Museum’s Documentation Unit. The post holder will operate
procedures of creating, accessing and tracking the paper files containing
the museum’s business and collections documents, and the procedures for
logging and monitoring enquiries that fall within the scope of the Freedom
of Information Act. Working closely with the Records Manager the post
holder will contribute to the development and implementation of file plans
and retention schedules to ensure the long-term preservation of appropriate
records and to prepare for electronic record keeping which will be
introduced initially for new projects.
Applicants should have a good general education, knowledge of the basic
principles of records management supported by typically at least one year’s
experience in a records management setting, plus awareness of the Freedom
of Information Act, the Data Protection Act, and the Government’s
Electronic Records Management initiative. Familiarity with standard office
IT systems is essential and experience with databases will be an advantage
but training will be given on the specific programs used in the museum.
Good communication skills, both written and oral, are necessary as the work
involves frequent contact with a wide range of museum staff, including
giving advice on management of documents and records. There is an element
of physical work involved and the post holder must capable of moving files
and archive boxes in order to maintain the documentation stores in good
order. A systematic and meticulous approach to work is a pre-requisite. The
post holder must be capable of undertaking routine work without close
supervision but should also be able to recognise and highlight issues that
need wider discussion.
