As Duncan brought up my name I'll add a few things to the Sony WAV converter
he mentioned.
There is an updated version of Audacity (audio recording software) that has
audio meters. The latest version is 1.2.3 and it can be downloaded here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/.
The Windows version of Transcriber is now at version 1.5.0. The regular
version on the main Transcriber site is still 1.4.2 but if you go to their
developer site at http://sourceforge.net/projects/trans/ you can get the
latest version. Maybe this is considered a beta. development seems to be
on-going.
There are a couple of new solid state digital recorders and prices are
getting a little cheaper and getting closer in price to the more expensive
portable minisic recorders.
Edirol came out with the R-1 a couple of months ago. In the USA it costs
around $440.
Marantz has announced the PMD-660. Looks like it will sell for under $500
and should be available in a few weeks. The PMD-660 is a reduced and more
portable version of the PMD-670. This should be available in a few weeks.
Looks like it will be a nice little recorder and the build quality looks
much better than the Edirol. See http://www.evsinc.com/pdf/PMD660_12-17-04.pdf
http://www.neilsonclyne.com/D_and_M/Marantz/PMD660/MarantzPMD660.html
The Edirol and Marantz recorders use CF Cards and have drag and drop
transfer using USB (i.e. they work like any other USB mass storage device so
there none of the complexitiy, speed limitations and unreliabity inherent in
Sony's ridiculous SonicStage/WAV converter HI-MD transfer process).
