Institute for the Study of Genetics, Biorisks & Society (IGBiS)
Masters & PhD Studentships
IGBiS is the leading UK centre for research training on both the social and cultural understanding of biological risk, and the social, legal, ethical and cultural issues presented by genetics, biosciences and biotechnology as applied to humans, animals or plants.
We invite applications from students expecting to obtain at least a good 2(i) degree. While IGBiS does not engage in pure scientific research, we encourage applications from those with backgrounds in biology, environmental science or similar fields who wish to pursue social, cultural or ethical research. We also encourage applications from people with backgrounds in the social sciences or humanities.
We offer three programmes: 1) PhD - we have an outstanding track record in winning external funding across a range of disciplines and will sponsor suitable candidates to ESRC, AHRB, Wellcome Trust and Food Standards Agency competitions, including one ESRC quota award; 2) MA Research Methods (Genetics, Biorisks and Society) - for students interested in proceeding to a social sciences PhD in this area. One or more University scholarships are available for these master's programmes, covering fees and a contribution to maintenance; 3) MA by Research and Thesis - offering more generic and self-contained research training. Further information about these programmes and about IGBiS are available at: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/igbis.
If you would like to know more about us and the opportunities we offer, please come to our Graduate Open Afternoon on Wednesday 2 February 2005 from 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm in the West Wing Foyer, Law and Social Sciences Building.
Candidates wishing to be considered for a scholarship should apply by the closing date below. Applications from students willing to self-fund can be considered at any time.
