I dont know if it has bearing on your area of interest. But I recall having
read somewhere that about then the Church approved the use of the vernacular
for teaching the general populace, which is why St. Cyril & Methodius
translated the bible for the Russian people.
Does that ring a bell for you, too?
Which would mean that although the monastic community was still happily
conversing over national lines using Latin as the common language, the local
priests could then teach their flock and read the bible to their flock in
the flock's native language.
