medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Everyone.
Hildegard preached--by invitation--to audiences of clerics. Catherine is
said to have preached to the rural laity, but the references are unclear. See:
Sabina Flanagan, Hildegard of Bingen, 1098-1179: A Visionary Life, 2nd ed.
(London, 1998), pp. 165-68
Hildegard of Bingen, The Letters, trans. Joseph L. Baird and Radd K.
Ehrman, 2 vols. (Oxford, 1994-98), vol. 2: pp. 91-94 (these pages contain
the text of one of her sermons to the clergy)
Karen Scott, "St. Catherine of Siena, 'Apostola,'" Church History 61
(1992): 34-46
