medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In Canon 11 of the Third Lateran Council, 1179, the word
seems to be applied to clerical concubines: 'Clerici in
sacris ordinibus constituti, qui mulierculas suas in
domibus suis incontinentiae nota tenuerint, aut obiciant
eas et continenter vivant, aut ab officio et beneficio
ecclesiastico fiant alieni'.

Dictionary of Medieval Terms and Phrases (it seems to apply
primarily, if not almost entirely, to documents from the
British Isles) and came across a cross reference from
"beguine" to "mulierculae", the latter being defined as
"The 'little women"' whom students at Oxford c. 1250 were
forbidden to have or keep in their lodgings. - Cf.
Beguine." Does any of the eruditi/ae happen to know the
source for this? and was this the usage on the continent,
too, for beguines ? In at least early medieval continental
sources mulierculae is simply a rather dismissive way of
referring to laywomen. > > Bernadette Filotas >
