4. Brittany and Cornwall. Arthmael was probably also important to the
Dukes
of Brittany in relation to any claims they might have on Cornwall or
vice
versa (members of the 'House of Cornwall' were Counts of Brittany from
the
mid-eleventh to the mid-twelfth century).
The Dukes of Brittany were of the House of Cornouaille (a Breton Comte
NOT
CORNWALL an English county) from the accession of Hoel II in 1084 until
the
death of his great-grandson Conan IV Fitz Berthe in 1171.
The similarity in the name of these two Celtic maritime territories has
caused confusion before - as does the similarity of "Breton" and
"Briton" -
a similarity which is found in the English, French and Latin renderings
of
the names.
