medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Chris,
Nice pictures, I'll try to bring my O-level German to bear on this.Anything
to get out of that tedious Monday morning argument about who's got too much
of a tummy ache to go to school. As you say, some of us really haven't got
better things to do.
So here goes:
psalter marie beten ordnen unnd machen solt (shouldn't that be solst?).
The following figure gives you (Dir) to understand and teach you how you
should pray, arrange, and make the
Psalter of Mary.
>Nÿme[w?]ar
/stuck on this one/
In the next-following figure is a paternoster that
has five large stones and after each one (einem jeglichen) there should be
ten small.
>
>The first large stone of the five is many colors and signifies >the
manifoldness of your sins.
>Der andere stein ist plaÿche
?bleich
, und bedeüt den ungewisen tod der dir
>gewiszlich zuekünftige ist.
The second stone is pale, and signifies the uncertain
death which certainly is in the future for you.
>
mu[e]szt geben von allem deÿm lebe~.
>The third stone is red, and signifies the Last judgment (das jungste
Gericht) at which you must give reckoning for all of your life.
>
>The fourth stone of the five is black, and signifies hell.
>
=Gebot
gotes.
>The fifth stone of the paternoster is golden, and signifies the glory >and
joy of the saints: which glory and joy is promised to those who there(?)
keep the commandments of God.
>
And this all is not more than a part of the psalter. But if you will make a
complete psalter, so make the second and the third part of the paternoster
[just] like the first part. And what the five big stones signify in the
first part of the psalter, that they should also signify you in the second
and third part[s] of the psalter, as you have them clearly in the reproduced
and written
>example, in one reads (man liest) how the holy Dominic once heard a
>knight's confession and after the confession he ?let the knight pray Mary's
Psalter and make [one] as described here.
