5 battlefields, North Yorkshire is an ideal place to carry out historic landscape study. The Heritage Section of the Planning & Countryside Unit works to conserve and enhance this unique historic environment through the provision of comprehensive development control, historic environment record (HER) and rural archaeology services. We are now seeking to recruit an Historic Landscape Characterisation Officer to assist our team of dedicated specialists.
Historic Landscape Characterisation Project Officer - Northallerton
Four Year Fixed Contract until 31 March 2009 - 37hpw
Salary: £22,512 - £24,000 REF:E6/03
You will be responsible for the creation of an historic landscape characterisation of North Yorkshire, City of York and Tees Valley areas. Your work will include desk-top historic map assessment, digital mapping and database creation, analysis of character areas, presentation of results, and the preparation of reports. Familiarity with the historic environment record systems of five local authority services is essential, and travelling to and working within these HER offices will be required. The post is for a fixed four year term.
To succeed, you must be a professional archaeologist or historic geographer with experience of landscape characterisation within a Local Authority or Government environment. A good working knowledge of landscape archaeology or historic land use, and experience of working with computerised HERs, databases or GIS applications is essential. An enthusiastic approach and an ability to work without supervision in a disciplined manner are also essential requirements.
