2005 marks the 21st anniversary of Michael Foucault s death. His reputation
as one of the most provocative and influential intellectuals of the last
century has ensured the continued analysis of his writings and lectures.
This session will take as its starting point Foucault s work on
governmentality. The analyses of advanced liberal democracies contained in
this work are highly relevant to geographers in many fields, although links
to existing and prospective future research remain relatively
underdeveloped. We seek to explore theoretical and empirical links between
work on governmentality and wider geographical research agendas around
authority, government, the demise of welfare regimes and the reinvention of
liberal economic policy. Following these themes, we seek to develop a
broader analysis of power and government in advanced liberal democracies
that is both informed by and informs Foucault s work.
This call is open to all researchers interested in the government of
advanced liberal democracies. Papers with a theoretical and empirical focus
are both welcome.
Please submit abstracts of up to 200 words and 5 keywords to Dave Land
