Dear Friends and Colleagues,
For this week's e-news bulletin, I have posted a number of articles on the controversial
topic of euthanasia in the Bioethics section of the DPI website. There are articles
relating to the decriminalization of euthanasia in the Netherlands and that country's
move toward euthanizing infants, as well as news of the continuing fight to keep
brain-disabled Terri Schindler-Schiavo from having her life support removed by
her husband in Florida.
In the Netherlands, where euthanasia for adults was legalized in 2001, there has been a move
toward euthanizing infants. It is already legal to euthanize any Dutch citizen over
12 years of age. Doctors at the Groningen Academy Hospital have admitted to euthanizing at
least three babies in the last year, claiming that "worldwide, [...] many deaths among
newborns are based on end-of-life decisions, after physicians reached the conclusion that
there was no quality of life." Citing an example of that lack of "quality of life," one
of the doctors mentioned a child born with spina bifida.
The case of Terri Schindler-Schiavo took a bit of a downward slide last week, when a Florida
appeals court threw out a new motion by her parents to protect her from her husband's desire
to remove life support. Michael Schiavo intends to go through with removing Terri's feeding
tube as soon as the court permits him to do so -- an act that will ultimately end in her death.
You can read articles on both of these cases by clicking on the links in the Bioethics section
of the list that follows. Is euthanasia being practiced on people with disabilities in your
country? If you have stories to share on this hot-button subject,
please send articles to [log in to unmask]
As I mentioned in our supplementary e-news bulletin earlier this week, DPI's Tsunami
Resources page is at http://www.dpi.org/en/resources/current_news/01-11-05_tsunami.htm.
Visit the page to find more information on what is happening to people with disabilities in
the disaster-torn region of Southeast Asia and Africa. I will continue to add more information
to this page in the near future.
