BEIJING TO BARBADOS IN A ROWBOAT

Illustrated Talk by Christian Havrehed
Lecture at GBCC, co-organised by Chopsticks Club
"A stimulating combination of adventure, initiative, bravery, philanthropy,
and perseverance” - Royal Geographic Society
Welcome the Year of the Rooster with an inspiring tale of courage, drama and
false starts. Christian Havrehed and Sun Haibin rowed 5,000km unsupported
across the Atlantic Ocean in a 7 metre-long rowing boat they had built in
China, spending 56 days alone at sea encountering storms, whales and a near
run down by a ship in the dark…
Nine months before their adventure, they did not know each other, could not
row, did not have a rowing boat, or any sponsors. Sun Haibin had never even
seen the sea before! Yet they persevered through bureaucracy and big waves
to became the first people from their countries (Denmark and China) to row
across an ocean, and raised over US$88,000 for a PRC charity.
Sun was subsequently nominated “Sportsman of the Year” in China, while
Christian, a Durham graduate, wrote a book about their experience, "From
Beijing to Barbados in a Rowboat", available at the talk (www.yantu.com).
