Consultation on the Bridgeman Art Library Collection
Deadline 21st February 2005
The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) mission is to provide
world-class leadership in the innovative use of ICT to support education and
research. In support of the JISC mission the Collections Team mission is to
negotiate for, and, where appropriate, to license quality assured electronic
materials that will provide the JISC community with a range of resources to
support education and research. Working Groups support the Collections Team
in acquiring online resources for the higher and further education
communities. The Working Groups are made up of representatives from the
educational community and cover images, ebooks, journals, moving images and
sound, learning materials and geospatial data.
The Collections Team and the Images Working Group have worked collectively
to license two online image collections, copyright cleared for use by the
education community; SCRAN and the Education Image Gallery.
SCRAN is an archive of over 300,000 copyright-cleared images taken from over
350 museums, galleries and collections.

The Education Image Gallery was specifically designed for educational
purposes at FE and HE institutions and provides instant access to a unique
and exciting collection of 50,000 images from the vast resources of Hulton
Archive, PhotoDisc and the Getty ImagesŪ News Service (current events and
sport).

The Collections Team sources the acquisition of new image collections based
on demand from the education community. Amongst the collections being
considered by the Images Working Group is the Bridgeman Art Library, which
offers a collection of 195,000 high quality digitised artworks collected
from over museums, galleries and other collections all over the world.

Before the Collections Team proceeds further it would like to gather
feedback from the art community stating if the Bridgeman Art Library or any
other online image collection, would be of use in teaching, learning and
research. We would be grateful if you could spend a few minutes answering
the following questions by completing the online response form.
1. What types of images are used in teaching and learning in your
department?
2. Is there a core collection of images that your department already
uses?
3. Are the images digitised or on slides?
4. What online images would be required to support teaching, learning
and research in your department?
5. Given the international scope of the BAL collection ranging from,
private to public treasures, pre-history to contemporary art and from the
fine and decorative arts to
social history and culture, would this provide you with benefits not
available elsewhere? Please provide examples of the benefits.
6. Would your institution / department subscribe to such a collection?
7. If yes, what would a reasonable annual subscription fee be?
8. Rather than a subscription collection, would you prefer to see
resource discovery tools such as an image portal which would point you to
freely available collections online?
Thank you for your time and assistance.
