I've been looking at the occupations of colliery workers in the 1881
census, and whilst there are many 'overmen', 'deputies' and variants of
these in Northumberland and Co. Durham, they are much scarcer elsewhere
- eg Lancs, Cheshire, Staffs, Notts and Wales.
Were there perhaps alternative job titles for these positions of
responsibility in coal-mining regions beyond the northeast?
If anyone can shed light on this I'd be most grateful.
Thanks,
Malcolm Smith.
