Esquire is probably the correct translation at all dates, but the
significance of the term will have changed with time.

Perhaps it would be useful to narrow down the period and regions in which
armiger was used to mean esquire. From experience in the north west of
England the correspondence between them seems to be invariable up to about
1700.
