The Humbul Humanities Hub is seeking postgraduate
research students,
librarians, lecturers and practitioners in the
humanities to undertake
freelance selection, description and cataloguing of
key online
resources
for a period of 6 months (initially).
The Humbul Humanities Hub (www.humbul.ac.uk)
discovers, evaluates and
catalogues online resources in the humanities which
are of use to
students, teachers and researchers in UK Higher and
Further Education.
Humbul is part of the national Resource Discovery
Network
(www.rdn.ac.uk), funded by the JISC (Joint Information
Services
Committee, www.jisc.ac.uk) and the AHRB (Arts and
Humanities Research
Board, www.ahrb.ac.uk). Humbul is based at Oxford
University Computing
Services (OUCS) (www.oucs.ox.ac.uk).
Applications are invited for two different roles:
* Subject Reviewers: responsible for discovering,
evaluating and
describing in detail online resources which are
suitable for inclusion
within the Humbul Humanities Hub. You must be able to
identify new
resources, and judge their quality and relevance for
your subject area.
This work can be done in your own time from any UK
location. The rate
is
£10.50 per hour for which we would normally expect two
descriptions
that
meet Humbul's criteria.
* Metadata Editors: responsible for completing records
of online
resources, which are already held in Humbul's
database, by adding
information such as the resource's author and
publisher, and the type
of
resource. This will build upon the work of the Subject
Reviewers and
will most likely be undertaken at Humbul's office at
Oxford University
Computing Services. The rate is £10.50 per hour.
Both roles will contribute to the quality of Humbul's
free service and
its usefulness and relevance to the academic
community.
Applicants for both roles should:
* have, or be nearing completion of, a PhD in a
humanities subject which is supported by Humbul; or
have a professional
library qualification together with experience of
working as a
humanities subject librarian;
* have excellent written English skills and be able to
proof-read your
work against editorial guidelines;
* be familiar with key Web resources in your subject
area, and,
ideally,
have used online resources to assist your research and
teaching;
* be computer-literate and comfortable entering data
into Web-based
forms;
* be able to take part in training, both online and at
Oxford
University
Computing Services;
* be available for work between February and July 2005
* be able to work to timetables and tight deadlines.
Humbul currently has 33 top-level subjects but we are
particularly
seeking to develop our collections in the subject
areas listed below.
Preference will therefore be given to applicants with
expertise in one
or more of the following subject areas:
* Comparative Literature
* Celtic Studies
* Italian Studies
* Middle Eastern Studies
* Japanese Studies
* Chinese Studies
* Slavonic and East European Studies (including
Hungarian, Bulgarian,
Romanian, Croatian, Czech, Serbian, Slovak, Slovene,
Ukranian, as well
as other East European and Baltic languages).
The following subject areas form the next priority
level for our
collection development. Individuals with expertise in
one or more of
these areas are also encouraged to apply:
* History
* Australasian Studies
* South Asian Studies
* Russian Studies
* Scandinavian Studies
* African Studies
* Classics
Further details about both roles and how to apply can
be found here:
http://www.humbul.ac.uk/about/recruit.html.
Closing date for applications is 11th FEBRUARY 2005.
Informal enquiries about both posts may be addressed
to Shoshannah
Holdom or Mike Fraser, email
