Hi Duncan
Coincidentally I was talking to Derek Morrison, head of the CDNTL
e-learning unit here at Bath University on this topic yesterday. Derek was
asking a similar question - how to make his Auricle Blog usable on a mobile
device.
I mentioned various technologies such as CC/PP (which has now stopped and
resurfaced as W3C's Device Independence work (see
http://www.w3.org/2001/di/).
Opera are targeting the mobile market, and their browser does have a
mobile device emulator (see
http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/smallscreen/).
Another approach is to make use of a CSS file for mobile devices (eg. see
http://www.w3.org/TR/css-mobile). I think this is the approach Derek has
taken for his Blog - see the PDA style option on the Blog at:
http://www.bath.ac.uk/dacs/cdntl/pMachine/morriblog.php
An issue for mobile devices is not only the small screen but designing
the interface so that users can avoid all of the navigational crud and
easily get to the content.
BTW remember that mobile users may also use offline browsers (e.g.
Plucker, Avantgo) to get Web content as well as live access using Pocket IE
(on my Sony Clie I harvest RSS feeds to get my content - sadly when I was at
the WWW 2005 conference last week, the BBC sports feed gave a very
unfortunate score for Everton fans - but that's probably out-of-scope for
this list!).
Hope this helps
Brian

Subject: Websites on Mobile Phone Browser
Does anyone have any examples of University/College websites which
are viewable or have sub-sites specifically designed for use on a mobile
phone/PDA browser? By this I don't mean WAP sites but more versions for
browsers such as Pocket IE.
Regards,
Duncan
