Supporting E-Learning in Art & Design

ARLIS/UK & Ireland Visual Resources Committee

DATE: Tuesday 24th May 2005

TIME: 10.00 - 16.30

VENUE: Lanchester Library, Coventry University, Gosford St, Coventry, CV1 5DD
AUDIENCE: UK art librarians and slide curators working in HE and FE, but other Art College and Museum Professionals concerned with E-Learning in all its forms will find the day useful.

"There are characteristics to learning in art, design and architecture (ADA) which define the subject(s) and make the learning within ADA subjects distinct from other (non-ADA) subjects".
HEA (2005) e-space in art, design and architecture

Presenters will include:

Simon Bell (Coventry), Practitioner and Senior Lecturer, Graphic Design Simon, the holder of a teaching excellence award, will demonstrate his innovative use of WebCT as part of a first year typography module taught to 180 students. He feels that working in this way, students take risks and look to each other as well as the lecturer for support. The medium fosters interdependence and mutual respect.

Sue Gollifer (Brighton), Practitioner and Senior Lecturer in Fine Art/Printmaking
Sue is the curator of the first, second, third and fourth UK international exhibition of electronic prints ArCade I, II III and most recently ArCade IV (2003). She is the SIGGRAPH Art Gallery Chair for 2004, in Los Angeles. Her main interest is the impact of new technology within the practice of Fine Art. She will discuss the pros and cons of VLEs and other new learning technologies.

David Ball (Sheffield Hallam), Slide Curator
David feels very strongly that slide librarians need to be involved in the display end of digital imaging as well as the supply. The successful display of the images is linked to the success of assisting staff to use this medium. He will cover his experiences with display software, particularly Microsoft Powerpoint which he uses in a non-linear way, and links to zoomable images.

David Clews of HEA-ADM (Higher Education Academy: Art, Design and Media Subject Centre). David will talk about the proposed 4 mini projects that will seek to evaluate e-spaces that are characteristic of and demonstrably enhance learning in ADA (Art, Design and Architecture) subjects.

Anne Atkins WCC (Western Colleges Consortium), Senior Projects Officer FAIR Enough project, established to conduct a series of experiments with the embedding of JISC collections and services into a variety of VLE and intranet delivery systems (portals). She will talk about the full image portal Pixus.

Katherine Baird (London College of Fashion, University of the Arts), Head of Learning Resources. The Woolmark Company archive: for use in the curriculum- a case study. Digital images from the International Wool Secretariat, now The Woolmark Company, are available through AHDS-Visual Arts.
