In the UK the common practice for modelling sewerage systems is to use the
Infoworks software package from Wallingford Software. As a company, MWH has
used this extensively in the UK and also overseas. In Americas we use a
version of the USEPA SWWM package produced by MWHSoft (our own software
company). Both of these applications reliably represent complex systems of
the size you envisage and can model both quantity and quality aspects. Key
to success is a proper model building process and we have developed our own
GIS based tools to assist this. For the larger areas, verification of
models based on measured flows and rainfall is recommended to ensure that
they represent prototype performance. you mentioned ancillary structures,
and understanding their hydraulic performance prior to modelling is very
important.

Hi all
Apologies for crossposting.
I was wondering how medium sized cities model and calculate their sewer
system. Which application do they use? What are the strenghts and
weaknesses of these programs? What is the maximum element these programs
can handle? Is it possible to compare present with future systems and
display differences? Are there any experiences from modellers in
Utilities/Universities/Sewerage Operators who handle sewer networks with
approximately 30'000 pipes/manholes and roughly 2700 anciliary structures?
