GridPP PMB Minutes 178 - 18th July 2005
========================================
Present: John Gordon, Dave Britton, Tony Cass, Robin Middleton,
Sarah Pearce, Tony Doyle.
Apologies: Steve Lloyd, Roger Jones, Dan Tovey, Dave Kelsey, Jeremy Coles.
1. LHC Exploitation Planning Review [TD]
========================================
TD noted that the deadline for ~3-page summary input on post-GridPP2
planning for 2007/8-2011/12 is August 5th.
TD said that it had been clarified with Janet Seed that GridPP should
also provide input on Tier-2 as well as Tier-1 resources.
Following a long discussion relating to slide 8 at
http://www.gridpp.ac.uk/cb/doc/GridPP_CB_Beyond_050708.ppt
it was determined that three high-level areas would be presented:
1. Tier-1 and International Operations (JG, TC, TD)
2. Tier-2 and National Operations (SL, DB, TD)
3. Middleware and Applications Interfaces (RM, RJ, TD)
(NEW ACTIONS)
TD noted that the bottom-up input would need to be constrained to the
sums already put forward to PPAP and the CB and in the PPARC roadmap.
There was particular concern from RM and JG that middleware development
resources were not included (only middleware support). TD noted that
further development, although required in some areas, would need to be
in direct response to the experiment requirements, since the terms of the
review required GridPP input on which the comments of the LHC experiment
UK project spokespeople will be sought. TD noted that, beyond this,
the (EU and UK) e-Infrastructure calls would probably provide the best
route for long-term middleware development.
It was agreed that an overarching management role for the 3 high-level
areas would be needed, corresponding to a proposed (post-GridPP) UK Grid
project leadership role.
Travel estimates were noted as already included in the planning.
It was agreed that ~1 page drafts would be prepared in each area prior to
next week's PMB.
Timeline:
28/7/05 - review of component parts
1/8/05 - review of prelim. complete draft
2/8/05 - circulate to CB for comment
5/8/05 - send to PPARC (Janet Seed) for LHC experiment and exploitation
reviewer comments
TD noted that the meeting with the reviewers was now fixed
19/9/05 - LHC exploitation review meeting (Swindon)
2. Dissemination Input to PPARC and RCUK (SP)
=============================================
SP went through the preliminary version of the input required by RCUK.
The list of highlight from projects was broken down into International
and UK achievements. Following PMB discussion, issues arising from project
relevant to the e-science programme as a whole were noted under
Documentation
Resource Brokering
Metadata
Networking
Information and monitoring
Storage
Security incident response procedures
VO support
Overview summary data was also reviewed. SP noted that she would prepare
a version for circulation to PPARC by this Wednesday's deadline.
Note: this was done - a version is now available at
http://www.gridpp.ac.uk/docs/rcuk_evaluation_2005.doc
Further comments can be provided to SP.
REVIEW OF ACTIONS
=================
STANDING ITEMS
==============
SI-1 ALL: to provide any news items and meeting dates for the web page to
SP.
SP noted recent news items and asked for further input.
SI-2 Production Manager's weekly report of issues.
JG noted that LCG2.6 was imminent and that all sites were green at
present.
167.3: RJ to define UK contacts for D0; CDF; BaBar; QCDGrid; ZEUS - who
will respond on experiment operational issues.
ongoing
167.5: DK to define a possible technical documentation role.
ongoing - priority raised by TD in response to OC comments
170.2: RJ to invite representatives to talk to the PMB about GANGA status
ongoing - DB noted that the GridPP13 talk was comprehensive, so this
should be brought up in response to issues raised there or questions
arising from this.
176.1: RM to ask NG to do the Middleware talk on Wednesday afternoon at
GridPP13.
Done.
176.2: TD to use self-test system to check end points re the sound delay
on JVCS OnDemand system.
Done. JG noted previously that this method did not reveal any sound delays.
Other tests would be needed.
177.1 - Tier-1 Board (via TD) to review methods of evaluation for estimating
experiment requirements.
Ongoing - following discussion with Ken Peach, a proposal was was being
prepared to release funds in FY05/06 in response to 2006 UB needs. This
required further iteration.
