Dear All,
Please note that if you're planning significant involvement in GGF,
then GridNet2 is one mechanism for funding trips.
Cheers, Tony

Announcement - GridNet2 Funding
-------------------------------
The GridNet2 funds have been provided by the EPSRC e-Science Core
Programme and the JISC JCSR to support UK e-Scientists who are making
substantial contributions to the development of relevant standards. This
follows on from the GridNet1 fund. The funding now covers additional
items, such as support for hosting a face-to-face standards meeting, but
also requires additional commitments from its participants, such as
reporting and engaging in coordination activity. The fund is set up to
support sustained engagement in standardisation. Therefore applications
are encouraged from those prepared to make such commitments or already
engaged in standardisation. Applications should normally cover a period
of work, e.g. a year, and may include several people at one institution.
This reduces bureaucracy and the workload on our reviewers.

QCDOC and Blue Gene: Next Generation of HPC Architecture
4th - 6th October 2005
Workshop hosted by EPCC
at the National e-Science Centre, Edinburgh, U.K.
http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/BGworkshop/
The first IBM e-Server Blue Gene system in Europe was delivered to EPCC,
the University of Edinburgh in December 2004. The University has also
recently installed a QCDOC machine, providing one of the world's most
powerful systems dedicated to the numerical investigation of Quantum
Chromodynamics. The Blue Gene and QCDOC architectures offer a
significant breakthrough in supercomputing technology, providing
unprecedented computing performance coupled with very low power
consumption, floor space and cost.
With the growing popularity of these systems, across a wide range of
applications, a workshop investigating their full potential is highly
topical. As the only centre in the world to host both a Blue Gene and
QCDOC system, the University is the idea location for such a workshop.
The workshop will be sponsored by IBM, and hosted by EPCC, University of
Edinburgh at the National e-Science Centre, Edinburgh, UK.
The programme comprises a series of presentations from experts users,
developers and programmers. The following speakers have been
confirmed:
- Steve Louis, Lawrence Livermore National Lab
- Katherine Riley, Argonne National Lab
- Gyan Bhanot, IBM
- Eric Kronstadt, IBM
- Kjeld van der Schaaf, ASTRON
- Arthur Trew, The University of Edinburgh
- Ed Jedlicka, Argonne National Lab
Registration for this event is free and should be done on-line. Please
see http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/BGworkshop/ for programme details,
information about the location and for registration.
The organising committee:
- Arthur Trew, EPCC
- Carl Tengwall, IBM
- Ed Jedlicka, Argonne National Laboratory
- Lorna Smith, EPCC

SSDBM 2005 (Santa Barbara, CA): Online registration available
The 17th International Conference on Scientific and Statistical Database
Management (SSDBM 2005) is now accepting registrations at:
http://regonline.com/ssdbm2005
The conference will be held at the Donald Bren School of Environmental
Science and Management at the University of California,
Santa Barbara 27-29 June 2005.
The fees will be $600 regular / $300 student after 25 May.
We have economical lodging packages available for those who wish to stay
in a UCSB student residence hall; these packages may be purchased as
part of your registration. If you wish to use one of the other
conference hotels (see the conference home page http://2005.ssdbm.org
for information), you must contact them directly (and you should do so
as soon as possible, since Santa Barbara is a year-round tourist
destination.)
We will provide limited transportation between lodgings and the
conference; details are provided as part of the registration process.
