ARC Research Associate in Innovation and Emerging Technologies
--------------------------------------------------------------
School of Information Systems
Curtin Business School
The ARC has funded a Linkage project in collaboration with Optus to
examine the potential of the Global Grid as 'an Infrastructure for
Innovation'. The research builds on a collaboration with the Edinburgh
Parallel Computing Centre and the Computer Network Information Centre of
the Chinese Academy of Sciences that has established a Grid Computing
link between Australia, China and the UK. This infrastructure represents
a unique set of relationships between academic and industry partners
drawn from the Telecommunications and Financial Services sectors in each
country, and has already applied the computing power of the Grid to
analyse consumer behaviour in each of these markets
(http://www.epcc.ed.ac.uk/inwa).
The Grid's potential for supporting and sustaining the growth of new
'virtual' industry clusters will be explored in this research and
candidates with a relevant background in interdisciplinary research are
encouraged to apply. The post may involve research visits to Edinburgh
and Beijing.

Upcoming Events at NeSC
-----------------------
Induction to Grid Computing and the National Grid Service, 29 - 30 March
2005
The National Grid Service is is the core UK grid, intended for the
production use of computational and data grid resources. NGS is the core
service resulting from the UK's e-Science programme
(http://www.ngs.ac.uk/).
The goals of this course are to give participants:
- an understanding of the concepts of Grid Computing and e-Research.
- an orientation to the NGS and the Grid Operations Support Centre
(http://www.grid-support.ac.uk/).
- sufficient practical experience to allow initial use of the National
Grid Service in future.

UK Globus Week
--------------
Motivation
The Globus Toolkit (http://www.globus.org/toolkit) provides libraries
and components that enable the development of service-oriented Grid
applications and infrastructures. Core Globus components address basic
issues relating to security, resource access and management, data
movement and management, resource discovery, and so forth. A broader
Globus ecosystem includes numerous tools and components that build on
core Globus functionality to provide application-level functions.
Globus Toolkit version 4 (GT4), to be released as a beta version in
March 2005, will provide a range of new services and features. In
addition, by delivering the first robust implementation of Globus Web
services components, GT4 completes the first stage of the migration of
Web services that began in 2003 with GT3. Thus, it is timely to convene
a meeting, both to communicate the latest status of Globus software and
to enable intense conversation between Globus developers and users
concerning future directions for open source Grid software.
Aims
The UK Globus Week has five aims:
To bring together people from the UK, Europe, and globally with a
significant interest in the Grid, Globus toolkit, and stable, standard,
and cost-effective high performance computing.
To present Globus developments and research, and to demonstrate case
studies of academic and commercial Globus use.
To provide a program of tutorials, workshops, Questions & Answers, and
demonstrations from the Globus Alliance, tailored to the needs to the UK
Grid community.
To develop a roadmap for continued Globus development, deployment,
integration, and support, which draws on skills and experience from
within institutions, eScience Projects, the Grid Operations Center
(GOC), UK National Grid Service (NGS), and UK Open Middleware
Infrastructure Institute (OMII).
To stimulate the formation of a community that will undertake this work.
To document the event's proceedings as a UK eScience Technical Report.
Presenters for the tutorals include Carl Kesselman, Bill Allcock,
Charles Bacon, Lisa Childers, and Jennifer Schopf, as well as other
members of the Globus Alliance who will be present for the week; a
valuable and rare opportunity for the UK and EGEE communities.
*******PLEASE NOTE DUE TO THE HIGH NUMBER OF PEOPLE APPLYING FOR THIS
EVENT WE ARE NOW FULLY BOOKED FOR WEDNESDAY 6 APRIL**********
